En Guarde! Children at Goostrey School are going back in time to reclaim some centuries-old pastimes.
Pupils will be polishing their foil, sabre, epee and bow and arrow skills at an after-school club with a difference.
This term, Premier Sport coaches will be teaching the after-school clubbers the art of archery and fencing.
Using ‘soft’ forms of equipment, pupils are being taught how to safely master the skill of the two sports.
In the fencing sessions, the coaches teach the children basic techniques including how to score and officiate, along with some friendly competition.
Ian Wilkes, from Premier Sport, said: “We are using the official start programmes and equipment from British Fencing, which is aimed at young starters to give them a flavour of the ‘real’ sport of fencing.”
The children practise their fencing and archery after school every Tuesday.
Year 8 pupil Matthew said: “I am so glad I decided to do it. I am really enjoying it.”
Classmate Jessica said she enjoyed the duels and the fact they can referee each other and Ruby, also Year 6, said Tuesday was now her favourite day.
Year 4 pupil Reuben added: “I feel like a knight. It is so much fun and we are really thinking about how to strike each other down.”
