A BUILDING at Barclays’ Radbroke Hall bears a new name.

The restaurant was renamed Furber House on October 23 after Professor Stephen Furber, who leads research in innovating computer science. The event is part of celebrations for the 40-year anniversary at Radbroke Hall.

Stephen Furber, a professor of computing engineering at Manchester University, delivered a talk about his career and his experiences in IT before opening the building.

Mr Furber said: “I worked at Radbroke Hall for about nine months in 1970.

“This was before Barclays moved in when it was owned by the previous company, the Nuclear Power Group.

“My father worked for the Nuclear Power Group on this site for 20 years, so in some sense this place belongs much more to my father than to me, but we share the name, so I guess in terms of naming the building that doesn’t matter too much.”

Professor Furber arrived at Manchester University in 1990 and established the Amulet research group, developing low- powered computers through an innovating computer structure.

He was awarded the CBE in 2008 for services to computer science.

“It’s a great honour to have the building named after me,” said Mr Furber.

“We are building great links with Barclays Technology Centre Radbroke (BTCR), and have students on site next week.”
