GIANT insects will be wandering the streets of Northwich in just a month's time – and you could be helping guide them through town.

Insectes by Sarruga, the headline act at the second Now Northwich festival, will see 20ft glowing bugs crawl from Northwich Library to Barons Quay, with volunteers needed to help bring the magic swarm to life.

The jaw-dropping parade will be the pinnacle of the event, which celebrates the finest international, regional and local dance and street arts acts in the town centre between 1pm and 9pm on Saturday, October 5.

Part of the Without Walls Creative Development Network, it is organised by Cheshire Dance in collaboration with Cheshire West and Chester Council, Northwich Town Council and Barons Quay, funded by Arts Council England, CWAC, Northwich BID, Charcoal Blue and members' budgets.

Knutsford Guardian:

Last year's inaugural event brought in an estimated 26,000 people to the town centre.

Just like the famous Giants – which brought hundreds of thousands of people to Liverpool – the Insectes, along with other acts on the day, will need their own swarm of volunteers to help get them moving.

Debbie Cowley, general manager at Cheshire Dance, said: “Last year’s event would not have been so successful without the fantastic support of the volunteers.

"They are invaluable to the Now Northwich festival and this year, we are hoping that more members of the community would like to get involved alongside our team, the artists and community groups.

"These volunteering roles will suit a wide range of individuals. From those interested in dance and street arts, to those looking to make a difference in their local town. Everyone is welcome to apply.”

Key volunteer roles include street ambassadors, artist runners, street evaluators, arts and craft helpers, and performance assistants.

Street ambassadors will work in pairs at key locations, either at a performance space or venue, to be the eyes and ears on the ground – answering questions and helping visitors make the most of their day.

Artist runners will be the extra hands – and legs – of support for the Now Northwich artist liaison team, helping to ensure artists get to the right locations on time, and ensuring they enjoy themselves.

Street evaluators, equipped with iPads, will help garner opinion on the festival, asking questions to help develop the festival for next year.

Knutsford Guardian:

With a Family Fun Palace at Northwich Library and a creative space in our family zone, arts and craft helpers will help smaller festival visitors get stuck in.

And if you fancy helping create one of the most stunning displays of the day, performance assistants are needed to help wheel around the Insectes during the procession route.

As such, a rehearsal will be required on the day before and volunteers are asked to commit to Friday, October 4 from 9am to 1pm and Saturday, October 5 from 3pm to 8pm.

All volunteers will also be asked to attend a festival briefing on Friday, October 4 from 7pm to 9pm.

You'll need to be a team player, aged 18 or over, and happy to be on your feet with a good pair of comfy shoes.

Bettina Carpi, who volunteered at last year's festival, said: “It was great to be part of Now Northwich last year and super to feel like a real member of the team.

"I can’t wait to get involved with Now Northwich again this year and highly recommended the experience to anyone who can spare a few hours this October."
