ICONIC 80s pop rock band Tears for Fears will be bringing the greatest hits from their wide discography to Delamere Forest in June this year.

The band embarked on their first UK tour in 14 years two weeks ago and the Guardian spoke to Roland Orzabal before the bands Nottingham show about the band’s comeback, touring schedule and surge in demand.

Roland said: “We play our last UK show until June in Nottingham before flying to Berlin.

“We have a couple of days there before our performance there so that will give us a nice little break.”

The band have spent most of their time touring the US since 2005 but after a sell-out show at the Albert Hall in 2017 they felt the need to return to the UK.

Roland said: “When we sold out the Albert Hall quickly and played at the BBC Radio 2 live concert we noticed that the demand for us to play here increased tenfold.

“It is nice to see that there is still a place for older bands like us because it never used to be like this.

“We played at Rock in Rio in 2017 to 100,000 people with the likes of Cee Lo Green and Jon Bon Jovi and that was an experience.”

Roland revealed that they have noticed the diversity of people in the crowds at their shows over the last few years.

He said: “We see a lot of people who are our age in the crowd but it’s great to see young people who were probably forced to listen to us growing up in the audience as well.

“I think a lot of young people can relate to the lyrics on songs like ‘the Hurting’.

Knutsford Guardian:

“The covers of our songs will have helped that especially with the likes of Lorde covering ‘Everybody Wants to Rule the World and Gary Jules’ cover of ‘Mad World’.”

The Weeknd also used a sample of ‘Pale Shelter’ in his song ‘Secrets’.

Tears for Fears have an extremely busy schedule at the moment with their own tour dates throughout Europe as well as a host of festival appearances.

Roland said: “Everything has gone really smoothly, we have so many fantastic people behind the scenes like our tour manager and stage manager.

“We have not really played a show promoting an album since 2005.

“Since then we have been touring the United States every year and we have become a hit band and the shows have been more about promoting a body of work rather than a particular album.

“The arena shows can be hard especially when they are important ones with everything that goes into them so I do really look forward to the outdoor shows now. They tend to be a bit more relaxed.”

Tears for Fears formed back in 1981 and Roland revealed that he never imagined that they would still be touring in 2019.

He said: “I didn’t think I would still be alive by now. As a kid you do not know how things are going to be in the future, I was wondering what my hair would be like when I reached 40 and what clothes would I be wearing.

“I still get nervous before shows now and the nerves can strike you at different times as well.

“The closer it gets the show though the easier it is to shake them because there is nothing you can do about it really, you just have to get on with it.”

The Delamere Forest show will see the iconic band perform their greatest hits in the open setting and Roland knows that fans will be in for a treat.

He said: “Fans can expect a level of musicianship with 80s minimalism and 70s indulgence. We are really looking forward to it.”

Tears for Fears will perform at Delamere Forest on Friday, June 21 and tickets will cost £54.95 including a booking fee.
