A ROCK and roll five-piece have penned an anthem for Warrington Wolves fans.

Filthy Tricks were invited to do a soundtrack for the team’s new season promo video and snapped up the opportunity.

The song chosen was Walk In Line – a track about never giving up – which has cemented the band’s partnership with the Wolves which has developed over the past couple of years.

Gerard Van Den Hoek, songwriter and guitarist, said: “It’s been amazing, we jumped at the opportunity and it’s already done wonders for our exposure and fanbase.

“We support the Wolves so it’s a massive honour, although not so much for lead guitarist Matty Hignett who supports Widnes Vikings and has even got it tattooed on his arm so he swallowed his pride and put a brave face on for the camera!

“It’s quite funny because when I was writing Walk In Line I pictured the song being used for a sporting event as the lyrics reflect a battle and never giving up so I think the stars aligned and it was meant to be used by our rugby club. I am extremely proud of it.”

Filthy Tricks, inspired by Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, The Doors, Rolling Stones, The Beatles and Kasabian, have been on the rugby league club’s radar since September 2018 when they were asked to play on the concourse before the Wolves v Saints game.

Then in May 2019 they were invited back to play on the pitch in front of thousands of Wire fans before kick off against Wakefield.

Gerard, 26, added: “We had just released our first EP, Run the River, just a month before so to play and promote our music in front of our full home town stadium was unreal and was definitely the highlight of our 2019.

“It wasn’t daunting – you feel more relaxed when you are doing something as part of the community – but adrenaline was racing through me, 15 minutes wasn’t enough.

“It was a great boost for us and felt special.”

The band are not resting on their laurels after their great start to the decade with the Wolves.

Gerard, from Newton, said: “The next move is going be a single launch for our track, Leah.

“It’s a fan favourite when playing live and everyone knows the lyrics already.”

The five-piece are also hoping to get out on tour and hit the festival circuit and have their hearts set on headlining Warrington Music Festival.

Filthy Tricks formed when Gerard met lead singer Liam Rimmer at a tribute night for his late brother Daniel Rimmer, of The 66, at WA1 in 2016.

Gerard added: “I witnessed the success of Liam’s performance that night and was blown away by his confidence and stage presence. After sharing a drink we instantly became friends and started to rigorously plan the formation of our band.”

Other commitments and a few false starts led the band to be put on hold until 2018 – but there is no stopping them now.

Gerard said: “We played quite a few times last year in Warrington and we launched our first single, Black Diamond Eyes, at Live Bar’s opening night.

"I’d say that gig was the one where people realised that we meant business and all the hard work we had put in up to that moment really paid off.”
