Do we really need Tesco to move back into town?

FOR many years Tesco had a small supermarket in Canute Square, but growing ambition to open superstores led them to close smaller supermarkets such as the one in Knutsford.

At the time, Tesco’s decision was lamented, for while the town was well served by independent retailers it lacked one-stop shopping venues, but Tesco was adamant, small stores were not the way they were going, and so they went.

In the intervening years much has changed in Knutsford and we now have Booths, the Co-op and soon to come the discount chain Aldi, all complemented by independent retailers.

Therefore, in the light of the high-handed way Tesco treated the town in the past, do we really need them back in Knutsford? I think not.
