Aircraft noise from runway two is intolerable

I REFER to the letter in the Knutsford Guardian from Mr James Smith – “It was your decision to live under the flight path.”

No, actually. I am a relative newcomer to Mobberley and my wife has lived here longer than me.

There are plenty of residents in the village, some born and bred who have been here still longer. We moved into our bungalow in 1962.

We were aware as Mr Smith says, of the existence of Ringway Airport and it was mildly entertaining to watch DC3 Dakotas, Viscounts and Vanguards flying from the original way.

They did not cause much disturbance.

However, the second runway was proposed some 30 years later and I should like to know how I could possibly have chosen to live under the flight path of runway two, which was inflicted on Mobberley by Manchester with no thought of the environmental consequences, but only with an eye on the commercial aspects.

It is important to distinguish between the impact of the original runway and that of runway two. Because the second runway is much closer to the village of Mobberley and Knutsford, aircraft are much lower when passing overhead and therefore noisier.

Two problems arose; firstly, property prices were affected. Secondly, there is the ongoing question of the noise nuisance. I would like to draw attention to another letter from Chris Bailey, who lives in Lilac Avenue and is a pilot.

He writes that when aircraft take off towards Knutsford, the pilots fly around it.

Good news for Lilac Avenue maybe, but when the Captain is giving it full wellie on take-off from runway two, the noise over the western end of Mobberley is intolerable.

I have complained many times to the airport and we have had readings of over 107 PNdB (the airport’s figure).

Mr Bailey also states that he will ‘concentrate on the noisier case, approaching to land over the town’ ie Knutsford.

So far as the residents of Mobberley are concerned, who did not elect to move under a flightpath, the noise is far more intrusive when taking off towards Knutsford.

H CATE Smith Lane, Mobberley
