WELL now that Esther McVey has got herself a safe Tory seat she is yet again upsetting the vulnerable.

Not content with being involved in the dismantling of the Remploy workplaces for disabled people in 2013, when she was ironically Minister for Disabled People, we now find that the Department for Work and Pensions, for whom she is Secretary of State, have moved the goal posts regarding the Support for Mortgage Interest scheme. SMI gives people on certain benefits help with their mortgage interest rates.

Support for mortgage interest has been in place for home-owners since 1948 and the SMI scheme was designed to protect claimants on qualifying benefits from repossession when out of work, retired or sick by contributing towards the interest payments on their mortgage.

Claimants were eligible if they had a mortgage and were in receipt of certain benefit.

Now under Esther McVey’s watch this is being axed and turned into a loan instead by the Tory government.

This vital safety net is being stripped away from low income home owners. She is certainly making her way up the Tory ladder.

Well, they aren’t called the Nasty Party for nothing.
