REGARDING the recent article on the renovation of High Legh Water Tower. I lived in the cottage that is now a separate property from birth in 1944, until I joined Manchester police in 1964.

At the top and inside the small room at the head of the stairs, were inscriptions made, in pencil, by soldiers manning anti aircraft guns during the Second World War.

I have so many fond memories, even seeing Lord Egerton arrive and getting his driver to climb the inside staircase and recite nursery rhymes in order that he could hear the remarkable ‘echo’ for which the tower was well known.

For old times’ sake, I stopped at the tower this year and took several photos. I would like to say what a wonderful job of renovation and improvement the new owners have made. I saw my first ‘Spitfire from the top of the tower in 1948.

I hope that the new owners will be just as happy as myself and twin brother were all those years ago.
