IN 2008 the Central and Eastern Cheshire Clinical Commissioners produced an outline specification for new health and wellbeing centres in Knutsford, Congleton, and Northwich.

Although at the time the facilities available in Knutsford had been dramatically reduced in the mid 1990s, people were quite happy with the remaining services available at Tatton Ward, Bexton Court, Knutsford Community Hospital and at the three GP surgeries suitably located to serve their patient catchment areas.

However, the CECPCT maintained that these facilities were not good enough, and as the option of doing nothing was not available, a Knutsford Community Panel was set up and the proposals were debated for a year.

However, the plans collapsed as there was no affordable suitable site available, and subsequently both Tatton Ward and Bexton Court were both closed.

Thereafter various surveys were undertaken including the Durrow report, but apart from vague promises nothing further was been heard of a new health and wellbeing centre for Knutsford until very recently.

Now it seems there could, possibly be built, at some ill-defined time in the future, some sort of facilities, although no details of what might be provided are available, apart, seemingly from co-locating the GP surgeries on the site at Bexton Road.

This is interesting, as this site was never considered suitable for the proposed new facilities and was rejected out of hand by the CECPCT in 2010 due to size limitations, difficult access and the already intractable traffic problems on Bexton Road.

So if the three GP surgeries are moved there, then the current problems will obviously be exacerbated and it is difficult to see how the long-promised additional facilities could also be accommodated on the site.

However, as it now seems to be the only site being considered possibly someone could enlighten us as to how the site’s shortcomings could be addressed?

Also helpful would be some details as to exactly what is planned for future health and social care in Knutsford on the Bexton Road site.
