I HAVE just finished reading this week’s front page article about Jacob Thomas’ recent experiences at his shop, Corner Groceries.

I was personally saddened to hear of his experiences as one could not wish to come across a more engaging and generous shop owner.

My partner and I have been regular customers at Jacob’s shop for the past two years and our young children look forward to their weekend visits to spend their pocket money.

Jacob and his staff are both courteous and generous and always ensure that nobody misses out. His range of goods is incredibly impressive for a small store and his prices are as competitive as the larger chains.

Most concerning for me is the fact that Corner Groceries provides an essential service to a tight knit local community with a high proportion of mature residents for whom travel to other local shops, especially in winter, is very difficult.

If such residents experience antisocial behaviour then there is a high likelihood that they will feel compelled to stay indoors and lose their independence.

If he had to close the business due to intimidation and threats then that would be a huge loss to the local residents.

Racial harassment like this must not be tolerated and I would encourage local residents to intervene and follow PCSO Fulton’s advice. If you don’t feel able to intervene yourself then call 101.

I will make sure that I pay Jacob regular visits and do what I can to reassure him and his team. I would encourage others to do the same.
