WE CAME visiting from Macclesfield to see inside places so often tantalisingly shut!

We had a fine day in Knutsford visiting loads of sites. The churches (Methodist and St Cross) were very welcoming, and so well set-up with tea, coffee, etc. Very civilised. Christian Witness at its best.

Other sites visited were the council offices, the library, the Sessions House and the Assembly Rooms.

I cannot understand how Knutsford, culturally-aware Knutsford, there-is-more-to-thetown- than-gas-guzzlers-and-glitzyeateries Knutsford, home of Mrs Gaskell, no less, is standing by and letting the Assembly Rooms decay like this.

It is disgraceful.

Such a beautiful room just mouldering away.

And what about the kooky circular ‘wig room’, or ‘card room’ as Pevsner calls it? Never seen the like of that!

The rooms would be a good venue for chamber concerts, weddings, bursting with history, and if Mrs Gaskell could enjoy the venue, it should be preserved.

Come on, Knutsford, you look after so many of your beautiful buildings and rooms so well. Add this one. I am sure there are ways and means.

Redeem yourselves, after the questionable development of the Royal George area, by rescuing this gem.

Thank you for making such an effort for the Heritage Open Days.

Knutsford is Alive and Well.
