CYCLE KNUTSFORD is very saddened to learn of the truly tragic fatal accident to cyclist Miroslaw Chlap on the A50 near Cotton’s Hotel.

We would like to pass our sincere condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.

The accident tempered the joyous celebration two days later as Knutsford hosted the Tour of Britain. The death follows that of another cyclist, David Holman, who died on July 13, following a collision with an HGV on the A556 near Plumley.

The detailed circumstances of these deaths of two cyclists in road traffic accidents within two to three miles of Knutsford within less than two months are not yet fully known, but it is clear that Cheshire East Council, in conjunction with Knutsford Town Council, should implement the long overdue infrastructure improvements to make our roads safer for cyclists whether for utility, commuting or recreation.

Our leading competitive cyclists who have done so much to add to our recent successes in international sport have told the government that the best way to honour their achievement would be to increase investment for improving life for everyday cyclists, calling for £5 per annum per head of population, rather less than most of our near neighbouring countries.

Knutsford is a popular destination for cyclists, benefiting economically, yet there have been almost no attempts to make it more welcoming.

We have been promised a legacy for the success in hosting one of the important stages in the Tour of Britain and where better to start than making our popular and attractive town and its environs cycle and pedestrian-friendly.
