WE read the recent article in the Knutsford Guardian about Rabbit Viral Haemorragic Disease (VHD) here in Cheshire and we understand how worried local owners may be.

We would therefore like to help by providing some further information, advice and support to your readers.

The original strain of VHD has been known for a number of years and there is a combined vaccine (Nobivac Myxo-RHD) for this original strain of (VHD 1) which also protects rabbits from Myxomatosis and which all rabbits should receive.

Unfortunately, a new strain (VHD 2) has now been recognised which the original vaccine will not protect against.

There is a new vaccine called Filavac and as reported it has unfortunately been difficult to obtain in the UK.

At our Holmes Chapel clinic we are fortunate to have stocks of the new Filavac VHD vaccine, which offers protection against the second strain of the disease.

This vaccine is available to both new and existing clients of the veterinary surgery.

Rabbits should be given both vaccines (Nobivac Myxo-RHD and Filavac VHD) annually. If you have a rabbit which is classed as high risk – such as those living outdoors, going to shows or mixes regularly with other rabbits – we advise that they are vaccinated every six months.

We are more than happy to provide advice should any readers wish to contact us on 01477 544554.

We have a team of exotic pet specialists who are experienced in the care of rabbits.
