I WAS born shortly before the British told Hitler to buzz off, when he expected Britain to sue for peace and the Battle of Britain followed.

Now, 75 years later, many of the people of this island have perhaps changed, and, either driven by selfinterest or cowed by the ‘scare’ campaign, are quite ready to ditch our long-cherished sovereign independence.

If we try to regain that independence, we are threatened by the US president, and our own prime minister tells that many ills will befall us if we leave Europe – privations will follow, and will even include possible added expense in taking a family holiday in the Mediterranean.

Are we to be remembered as the fearful generation who presided over the remortgage of Great Britain, the last chapter in our history as an independent, governing ourselves without the ever tightening European straitjacket?

I, for one, don’t relish passing on to my grandchildren this reduced and cheapened inheritance, and I suggest it would be folly to remain a member of this costly and creaking alliance, led by Germany and France with a following of stares of differing backgrounds and disparate needs and aspirations.

Let’s take our leave and govern ourselves once more, regain control of our borders, trade with whom we please, form alliances of our choice and get on with life.
