IT HAS been revealed by Highways England that there have been over 600 near misses, and one fatality on the M25 since 2014 when the new Smart motorway was introduced and the hard shoulder abolished.

This alarming figure should make us very worried indeed as the current M6 works are under way.

Police and public are put at risk by this crazy scheme, and the traffic officers’ trade union has backed a call for a review of smart motorways, which they believe has put their members at risk, and has been responsible for hundreds of near misses.

This policy has come about because it is seen by the Department of Transport as a cheap way of increasing capacity.

Yet another reason why we shouldn’t be sending around £50 million per day to Europe, and be spending our money on proper upgrades to our road network.
