I READ your article regarding a pensioner being charged 50p for a glass of water in a Cheshire pub last month.
It is a matter I have interest in, having worked in the licensed trade and provided training for licensees and door staff.
It is a commonly forgotten requirement of the licensing regulations that licensed premises must serve water suitable for drinking – usually straight tap water – free of charge to anyone requesting it.
The latest incarnation of this requirement is under the Licensing Act 2003 and was included in an attempt to promote the consumption of water and prevent binge drinking.
I believe this instance provides a suitable opportunity for you to contribute to the education of the public regarding this matter as the premises concerned appears from the story to be in breach of this requirement of their licence.
