INCONSISTENCIES and anomalies notwithstanding, the recent legislation on smoking in vehicles is welcome, as is the encouragement offered in your recent Health Matters to quit smoking.
Just as urgent is the epidemic of diseases related to the toxicity of exhaust fumes and the lethality of diesel particulates in particular. This condemns whole swathes of the population to becoming victims of inescapable passive smoking.
Technical means of mitigating this irresponsible pollution can only go so far and can so easily be undermined if fossil-fuelled traffic continues to increase.
We must find ways of moving which are improve rather than harm our health such as walking and cycling and reduce the need to travel in the first place.
