HAVING glanced at Manchester Airport’s new development plans, the public transport section is very disappointing.

Not only is there a lack of new public transport links proposed to support the airport expansion but they actually say they want to remove the safeguard put in place to allow a future western rail link as they don’t think it will be required. The western rail link would have been a rail line between the end of the airport spur and the Mid-Cheshire line, just north of Mobberley station.

I think as a condition of planning permission the airport should be required to provide public transport services from Knutsford, Wilmslow and surroundings to the airport which would allow someone to arrive at the airport two hours before the first flight and to leave the Airport one hour after the last flight is scheduled to arrive. If the airport wants to have arrivals and departures all day and night then a 24-hour service would have to be provided.

It’ll then be up to the airport whether they think a rail link or a bus link would have a better business case.

I think the airport should be required to offer more work experience placements and apprenticeships to young people in Cheshire.

The public transport links I suggested would make it possible for young people in Cheshire to take up those places without relying on a parent to drive them to and from the airport.
