IN response to the article, Guardian, May 6 concerning the speed restrictions on the A535 between Holmes Chapel and Chelford. The new restrictions of 30mph on a main road are totally ridiculous and out of context with a main A road.

The two areas at Jodrell Bank and Tremlow Green are not residential areas – I see no pavements or street lights. Every single A road in the UK would have to be reclassified as a residential area if the classification used for these two areas was applied, so why are these areas a 30mph zone?

The only reason I can think of is that residents wish to make our lives safer by slowing down to 30mph in preparation for a sharp bend. Drivers can use common sense for this.

Far more dangerous is compression waves formed by the 30mph zones at rush hour. Having used this road for 20 years I have very rarely seen an accident apart from in severe, adverse weather conditions. Most of the time the traffic cannot get above 45mph.

Compression waves form when cars a mile away at the front of the queue slam on the brakes causing drivers further down the line to come almost to a standstill. This is very dangerous.

Can we have some common sense please and return the limit to 50mph? When the speed limit is set ridiculously low, no one will abide by it. When it was set at 50mph everyone did. Doesn’t that tell you something?

Can Cheshire East and the residents please survey drivers of this road before making ridiculous decisions.

Let us decide whether we think this road is unsafe and whether we want a 30mph or 50mph zone and whether we want speed cameras or not. It is our lives, it should be our choice.
