I MUST be rather dim because I really cannot see why we need HS2.

In the past six months I have travelled to London twice with my two children, once from Crewe and once from Wilmslow. On both occasions we arrived in under or just over two hours.

Who really needs to get to London any quicker than that? If the train had travelled much faster I think I would have found it unnerving.

Add to this the appalling desecration of farmland, countryside and ancient woodland that would take place and the case becomes weaker still.

Finally, we can’t afford it. With cutbacks biting hard in areas that affect us all, such as health, education and care for the elderly, why are we even considering this vanity project that will not benefit the vast majority of us?
