IT was very interesting to read Jeremy Craddock's views on the history and rationale of British Summer Time (BST).

In addition to the economic issues forwarding and reversing the clocks, there is the important issue of road safety (and perhaps crime too).

Putting the clocks back in winter months costs lives and one of the reasons that the experiment to extend BST all year round, was not made permanent was the understandable objection of the Scots who wouldn't see daylight until late in the morning in the depths of winter.

I was relieved when the referendum vote last year protected the Union. However, political and constitutional developments may yet result in Scottish independence.

This would be regrettable but might it mean at last, an end to the veto on a measure that could save many lives and prevent many injuries?
