I TOO, spent much time examining the King Street re-development plan. In my view it is merely a cosmetic up-lift of the existing arrangements, without solving any of the problems.

A key to this, is the answer to the question: will it be better for wheelchair and pram users? The answer is a resounding no, because the scheme retains kerbs of at least 50mm, with narrow pavements.

The solution lies in making King Street a shared space, without any kerbs. The area then becomes wheelchair and pram friendly. A speed limit of 15 mph would not inconvenience motorists.

Poorly sighted folk would be catered for by having ‘notional pavements’ in a differing texture.

Shared space roads are an increasing feature of town centres, locally in Poynton and the most notable being Exhibition Road in South Kensington, London.

Come on Cheshire East, this study cost £15,000, let’s think again.
