HEADLINES ‘Traffic chaos’ and ‘Roads gridlocked’ remind us of the downsides for communities near motorways.

Those who travel by car know the detours through towns well. Knutsford is no exception.

Its advantage of being close to the M6 is offset by the disadvantage of traffic congestion. Before advocating a bypass, Guardian letters, February 12, look at the map.

Where would it go?

How much Green Belt and agricultural land will be taken? How many houses and/or business parks built between a by-pass and the town?

What impact for those already on the edge of town, overlooking open land? What size would Knutsford become?

Proposals at Congleton provide for ‘opening up developable land’, with many new homes and employment land between a new link road and the town centre.

Cheshire East Council say that Knutsford’s traffic problems are manageable, with through traffic routed away from the town, via Congleton link road, and airport link to the A6.

I’m sure many people would like to put forward ideas for local improvements in Knutsford. Perhaps the Guardian might invite suggestions from its readers?

Development proposals of Tatton Estate seem well over the top. Smaller-scale development would also help fund local improvements and without the disadvantages of a bypass.
