ARE the residents of Knutsford sleepwalking into a Titanic disaster? Recent articles and letters to the Guardian give no indication that the residents are aware of the implications of recent long-term planning applications.

Do our local councillors have any sense of the impending disaster if they permit the present housing plans to reach fruition? It seems to me, that like the Titanic we are heading for a major catastrophe unless some common sense comes into the planning area.

I accept that as a nation we need to build more houses and Cheshire East should meet some of this demand. However, planning applications for major housing in north Knutsford, Parkgate and now Booths Hall as well as Cranage and Holmes Chapel will have a disastrous effect on all residents. The road structure and services of Knutsford will be overwhelmed. Small progressive development should be the way forward.

I have lived in Knutsford for 30 years; it is a delightful town with good facilities and access to the Peak District and Greater Manchester. These planned major housing developments, if constructed, will overload the statutory services and bring the roads into deadlock.

Residents need to wake up to these dangers and ensure that local councillors are aware of this potential disaster and act accordingly.
