Motorways and A roads are our area

I WRITE in response to a letter you published in the Knutsford Guardian on March 6 – ‘All arterial routes have roadworks’ – in which Mr Paul Henty complains the Highways Agency has been involved in operating roadworks along the A537, B5085 and A50.

Your readers might find it helpful to note that the Highways Agency is only responsible for motorways and some key A roads – around Knutsford, the M6, M56 and the A556 between the M6 at Knutsford and the M56 at Lymm.

All other routes in the area are the responsibility of the local highways authority.

Your readers can easily check the extent of the Highways Agency network by visiting highways.gov.uk.

The Highways Agency is an Executive Agency of the Department for Transport (DfT), and is responsible for operating, maintaining and improving the strategic road network in England on behalf of the Secretary of State for Transport.

More information about the work of the Highways Agency and its remit is available at highways.gov.uk or by ringing the Highways Agency Information Line on 0300 123 5000.
