Wording influences the answer you get

I HAVE just seen a copy of East Cheshire NHS Trust’s questionnaire on the closure of Tatton Ward.

It contains a fine example of how to word a question in order to influence the answer so you get the answer you want.

The first and main question is, “We believe in providing a superior environment for patients needing our care. To enable us to provide this the Trust propose to close Tatton ward. Do you agree?”

There are two options for answer, yes or no.

If I answer yes then I am agreeing to the closure. If I answer no, I am implying I don’t want them to provide a superior environment!

Machiavellian, isn't it?

I wonder if the person/people who designed the non-public ‘public consultation’ – and its unpublicity - will be promoted or sacked?

No. What I really wonder is:

1. Who is working for whom?
2. Why is so much of our health money being wasted?
3. Are the old, ill and frail really so unwelcome in our public NHS, that our senior, organising public employees think they can 'sell us a pup'?
4. Where is our help with transport to hospital?
5. Who cares about the family carer?
6. When will the stated (Oct 2010) 'few weeks' be up, so that the ‘very well thought of’, Tatton Ward can be reopened? (120 weeks surely does not count as 'a few weeks'?)
7. How many people have been forced into full-time care because of the lack of locally available simple nursing care?
8. How many – often elderly – family carers have, through exhaustion, ruined their own mental and physical health, because of the pressure of the enforced removal of local Intermediate Care?
9. How many PCT – or now ex-PCT - senior staff are now behind this fiasco in the Knutsford area?
10. Who exactly, will be running our newly establishing CCGs? I write here not only of the front people, but those who have crossed over, since the PCT effectively vanished last July.
11. When will our War Memorial Hospital be reopened, extended and brought back into use?
12. How many ill/old/frail people – or parents with sick children - really want to have to trek from Mobberley and Parkgate/Longridge via current public transport, to see a GP, who would ‘like to relocate into the town centre’?

There are other questions, re pharmacies, lack of transport etc.. but I would not wish to bore. Answers might be nice.
