Britain braced for widespread frost

Britain is braced for a major cold snap with freezing temperatures forecast for the weekend.

Following the wettest November on record, widespread frosts and isolated wintry showers are set to the hit the country.

Stephen Davenport, a forecaster with MeteoGroup, the weather arm of the Press Association, said it would be "noticeably colder".

"It's certainly going to be far more wintry than it has been," he said. "It will be fairly noticeably colder this weekend. It will be mostly dry with a few showers in East Anglia and the south east.

"There may be reports of snow showers on high ground in the north of England but they will not be sustained."

Temperatures are likely to drop below freezing in the north of England and to about 2C (35F) over the weekend.

Mr Davenport said it was too early to predict whether Britain would get a white Christmas but added snow showers were likely before then.

The RAC warned drivers of increasingly treacherous conditions on the roads, with fog also possible.

A spokeswoman for the Met Office said temperatures are likely to be slightly below the seasonal average - and were set to drop further in the next week.

"We expect temperatures to fall steadily over the weekend, starting tomorrow," she said.
