Survival guru Bear Grylls has been named TV's top adventurer.

The former SAS officer-turned-broadcaster triumphed in a poll for Radio Times, finishing ahead of runner-up Ben Fogle.

Other highly ranked names included Ray Mears at number three, while the late Steve Irwin - who was killed by a stingray while filming a documentary in 2006 - came fourth.

Bear - who makes his film debut, voicing Disney's Planes: Fire & Rescue - was most recently seen in Channel 4's The Island in which contestants had to fend for themselves after being dropped in a remote location.

More than 4,000 votes were cast in the survey by RadioTimes.com/Travel.

The magazine's travel editor, Jade Bremner, said: " Bear Grylls has managed to create his own brand of adventure TV. He's mastered the art of getting viewers to wince and squirm, while leaving them tempted to actually try the scary stunts and weird bugs on their own travels."

Seriously? Bear Grylls isnt fit to lace the boots of Ray Mears, Ranulph Fiennes or the original bush tucker man Les Hiddins for that matter.

Unbelievable! Bear Grylls has been proven to be a fake time and time again! Why is the awarding body oblivious to this? The only things he has going for him is that he is reasonably good looking and has good PR. That's about it!

You're all being totally unfair to the brave Bear Grills ( Don't they sell bear grills in the Waitrose "Exotic Foods From Around The World" chiller cabinet? )
Brer explores remote and dangerous parts of our world with no thoughts of personal danger or hardship.
He has no means of protection, except a ten man film crew, six berth caravan, three nurses, personal trainer, feng shui advisor, sat nav, helicopter,Lear jet and clean underwear in case he spots a large spider.
I think apologies are in order.
