Robin Thicke has insisted cheating rumours had nothing to do with his split from his wife - but admitted he became greedy, selfish and big-headed.

The Blurred Lines singer, 37, has been trying to win back childhood sweetheart Paula Patton, apologising to her publicly while on stage.

Opening up about the split, he told New York's Hot 97 radio station: "It's not that simple... it was right (but) sometimes people grow apart. You don't build love in a day and you don't lose it in a day."

He added: "We're apart because we just couldn't be together any more, for a while. There's a 100 different reasons, there isn't just one. There's a long list... I changed, and I got a little too selfish, a little too greedy, a little too full of myself."

He admitted he hadn't seen his ex, the mother of his son, for four months.

"Maybe a year or two off, we'll become our own people without each other and it'll be more stable," he added.

Robin, who fell victim to a Twitter hijack when people used a Q&A to call him sexist, admitted to Hot 97: "She hasn't heard [the album, called Paula]. She's only heard a few songs and I don't think she wants to hear it right now. I can't speak for her, but I think space is an important part of any healing process."

He added: "She's the best girl in the world, a great mother, and still a good friend. I want to wish her well and let her know that she's a great person and she deserves to have a good life..."

He added: "She was my rock... Everything we have right now, we built together."

He said: "I'm a man. I messed up and had to lie for a while. Then I stopped lying."
