Chrissie Hynde is releasing a solo record

Chrissie Hynde has said she doesn't like playing her old Pretenders songs.

The US singer, who has lived in the UK for 40 years, formed The Pretenders in 1978 and the band released nine albums together.

She is releasing her debut solo album, featuring collaborations with Neil Young and Bjorn Yttling, and the singer said it would be that record that she will perform at Meltdown, the arts festival at London's Royal Festival Hall.

"I won't be playing any of the old Pretenders songs. I can understand why there are acts out there playing all their old music, but it doesn't turn me on, not at all," she said.

"If you're not making records that people want to buy any more, or that even speak for themselves, then play the hits. I'd rather do something that feels right, right now.

"Playing old hits isn't that much fun, unless you haven't done anything for the last 35 years. For me, I've done a lot in the last 35 years, and having fun is everything."

Chrissie said that she hated the phrase solo album and that the new record was a collaborative effort.

"I never wanted to be solo, and I said a thousand times I never would, so it gives me a cold chill to see my name out there on its own... I like being in the background, I'm not the show-off that you think I'm going to be," she said.

:: Chrissie Hynde releases her debut solo album Stockholm on June 9. She performs as part of James Lavelle's Meltdown at London's Royal Festival Hall on June 14, and at Latitude Festival in Suffolk on June 19.

Selfish and stupid but all too common for 'artists' to belittle and ignore the people that gave them the success and wealth over the years.

What a stupid girl(can I call her that?) Of course she should play her new music, BUT don't forget how she got there! It's what gave her the opportunity to be where she is and the people who paid money for her "old" songs. Be a little humble Chrissie and thank your fans for the life you lead-Entertaining.

At least she is warning the fans in advance. This is progress. No gig will ever match Mongo Santamaria at Catford Town Hall in the early 90's. Mongo was a bit past his best. In fact he was so old it was not clear he was alive, or all there, or just injected to be between the two conditions for about 45 minutes. one felt that the poor bloke had been kidnapped and put to work. The young band had to lift him on stage, lift his arms to play his bongoes, and have a younger double playing most of his parts
