Liam Payne has apologised after footage was published appearing to show two of his One Direction bandmates smoking cannabis.

The video - which emerged in late May and was published on the Mail Online website - was apparently filmed by Louis Tomlinson during the boy band's tour in Peru and seemed to show him sharing a joint with bandmate Zayn Malik.

Liam has now addressed the controversy, writing on Twitter: "I love my boys and maybe things have gone a little sideways I apologise for that. We are only in our 20's we all do stupid things at this age."

The 20-year-old went on: "We all have a lot of growing up to do in an extreme circumstance I'm not making excuse but it's fact we are gunna fall short somewhere.

"Hopefully we stand the test of time an get it right in the end I don't take this for granted and im extremely grateful to be here doing this."

The singer also thanked One Direction's fans for sticking with them.
