Damian Lewis is set to star as Henry VIII in the BBC adaptation of Hilary Mantel's Booker Prize-winning novels Wolf Hall and Bring Up The Bodies.

The Homeland actor is the most recent casting announcement for the BBC Two production which will be shown in six parts, according to Deadline.

It charts Thomas Cromwell's meteoric rise to fame from a poor life as the son of a blacksmith to Henry VIII's most trusted advisor, and Damian will star alongside Mark Rylance as Cromwell.

Other cast already confirmed include Claire Foy as Anne Boleyn, Mark Gatiss as Stephen Gardiner, Jonathan Pryce as Cardinal Thomas Wolsey and Joanne Whalley as Katherine of Aragon.

The programme has already started filming in south west England and is due to air in 2015.

Damian can next be seen in the film Queen Of The Desert, about traveller Gertrude Bell's life, later this year.
