Three Potter spin-offs planned

Knutsford Guardian: JK Rowling is expanding the Harry Potter universe JK Rowling is expanding the Harry Potter universe

JK Rowling is writing a new trilogy of films set in the world of Harry Potter.

The author has already confirmed she is penning a screenplay inspired by her 2001 fictitious wizard textbook Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them, which is used by pupils at Hogwarts.

And according to an article in The New York Times, it has now been revealed that there will actually be "three megamovies" focusing on magizoologist Newt Scamander, who wrote the textbook.

The spin-offs will be set before the adventures of boy wizard Harry and his friends Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley, played by Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint in the franchise.

The Times article is about new Warner Bros CEO Kevin Tsujihara and Rowling is quoted as saying that he made the project a reality.

"When I say he made Fantastic Beasts happen, it isn't PR-speak but the literal truth," she said. "We had one dinner, a follow-up telephone call, and then I got out the rough draft that I'd thought was going to be an interesting bit of memorabilia for my kids and started rewriting!"

JK previously announced on Facebook: "Newt's story will start in New York, 70 years before Harry's gets underway."

She explained it would be "neither a prequel nor a sequel to the Harry Potter series, but an extension of the wizarding world".
