Knutsford Guardian: Angelina Jolie's evil sorceress Maleficent often scares children Angelina Jolie's evil sorceress Maleficent often scares children

Angelina Jolie has revealed that children often cry when they meet her in character from Maleficent.

The Oscar-winning actress, who plays the Sleeping Beauty sorceress, admitted that the large horns, sculpted cheekbones and blood-red lipstick can be quite scary for young kids.

"I think I'm a Disney character, so when children visit the set, I keep going up to them and smiling. They often cry!" the mother-of-six told Empire.

"One even said, 'Mummy, please tell the mean witch to stop talking to me!'," she added.

Angelina, who said Maleficent was her "favourite" villainness when she was little, has turned the character into a more sympathetic figure in Robert Stromberg's live-action version.

"What I like about her is that she's an awkward, orphaned girl; she grew up in a tree by herself," she explained.

"She doesn't really fit in, and I think a lot of children will identify with that. She deals with abuse in her life, and goes quite dark, and that's the Maleficent that everyone remembers. But there's always a part of her that's struggling for what she thinks is fair and right."

Elle Fanning will portray Princess Aurora, with Sharlto Copley as King Stefan in Maleficent, which opens in cinemas on May 30.
