Fry to narrate same-sex wedding

Knutsford Guardian: Stephen Fry will narrate one of the UK's first same-sex weddings Stephen Fry will narrate one of the UK's first same-sex weddings

Stephen Fry is to narrate one of the UK's first same-sex weddings which will be conducted in the form of a musical and broadcast by Channel 4.

Composer Benjamin Till and his partner Nathan Taylor, a West End stage star, are writing the entire ceremony as a musical with all the vows and readings to be sung.

Our Gay Wedding: The Musical will also feature set-pieces from family and the broadcaster said there will be appearances from "surprise guest stars and showbiz legends".

Stephen will introduce the 60-minute programme as well as adding his commentary.

Same-sex marriage becomes legal in England and Wales on March 29 and Channel 4 wanted to mark the milestone by commissioning the programme about the wedding.

Till, who has composed for a number of documentary musicals including Channel 4's A1: The Road Musical, said: "We've been together for nearly 12 years, and never thought we'd get the chance to get married, for real.

"Doing what we both do for a living has meant that we've spent our entire lives expressing emotion through song, so getting married in a musical, particularly one that we're writing ourselves, felt like the most natural thing in the world."

Taylor has appeared in productions such as Les Miserables, Miss Saigon and Spamalot.

John Hay, the station's commissioning editor for arts, said: "We are proud to be marking a huge milestone for gay rights - a cause that has long been close to Channel 4's heart."

A broadcast date has not yet been announced.
