John Travolta has told how the death of his teenage son Jett was "the worst thing that's ever happened in my life".

Sixteen-year-old Jett died after suffering a seizure on a family holiday in the Bahamas in January 2009. The Saturday Night Fever star opened up to veteran broadcaster Barry Norman about the tragedy during an on-stage interview at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane in central London at the weekend, the BBC reported.

Travolta confessed: "The truth is, I didn't know if I was going to make it. Life was no longer interesting to me, so it took a lot to get me better."

The 59-year-old actor and his wife Kelly Preston have two other children: 13-year-old daughter Ella Bleu and three-year-old son Benjamin.

Travolta credited the Church of Scientology with helping him to recover in the months following his son's death.

"I will forever be grateful to Scientology for supporting me for two years solid, I mean Monday through Sunday," he said.

"They didn't take a day off, working through different angles of the techniques to get through grief and loss, and to make me feel that finally I could get through a day."

Travolta also discussed the downturn in his film career following lead roles in hit movies Saturday Night Fever and Grease, which was turned around by his Oscar-nominated performance as a heroin-addicted gangster in Quentin Tarantino's 1994 film Pulp Fiction.

The actor admitted: "It got a little complicated for a few years. A lot of things added up to a five-year period that wasn't so good for me.

"There were people who were much hotter than me who wanted the role, b ut Quentin put his career on the line and refused to make the movie without me in it."

Travolta also revealed he would like to play a villain in the next James Bond movie, and revealed he had openly courted the role during an informal meeting with producer Barbara Broccoli.
