Neame: Downton still going strong

Knutsford Guardian: Downton Abbey, starring Michelle Dockery and Tom Cullen, is not planned to finish after series five Downton Abbey, starring Michelle Dockery and Tom Cullen, is not planned to finish after series five

Downton Abbey's executive producer has dismissed speculation that the hit show could be about to end.

Gareth Neame said Julian Fellowes' comments, made in an interview in The Wall Street Journal, had been misconstrued.

The speculation came after Julian, the ITV show's creator, said he didn't "know yet if there is a season 6, but it's not going to go on forever.

"It won't be Perry Mason," he added, which some had taken to mean that it was due to finish soon.

According to Deadline, Gareth said in a statement: "I can confirm that there are no plans to end the show after the fifth series.

"ITV commission each series on a year-by-year basis. In an interview given to The Wall Street Journal, Julian Fellowes stated that the show would not go on forever (inevitable of course and something both he and I have been on the record for previously).

"For now ITV have commissioned series five, and that is what we are busy preparing."

Julian is signed up to script US period drama The Gilded Age with NBC, which Gareth will also work on, and has previously said that if the broadcaster picks it up as a series he will write it when Downton "finishes".
