Redford's hearing almost All Lost
Robert Redford was left partially deaf after being repeatedly sprayed with a power hose for his new film All Is Lost.
The 77-year-old actor plays a man stranded on a yacht in the middle of the Indian Ocean and insisted on doing most of his own stunts in the film.
Robert told the New York Times how he spent hours shooting the film in Mexico in the same giant outdoor water tanks that James Cameron used to make Titanic. There were wave, wind and rain machines and a crew member who sprayed a giant hose at his head, leading to an infection that cost him 60 per cent of his hearing in his left ear.
Robert said: "They beat the hell out of me."
The award-winning actor and director revealed there was a stunt double on hand, but he insisted on taking the plunge.
He revealed: "We get down there and, of course, my ego kicks in. I started saying, 'I think I can try that. Let me see what I can do.'
"And I realised that my doing that stuff was really a big part of the character, and that it would be much better for the film if he [director JC Chandor] didn't have to cut and slice."
And the veteran Hollywood star admitted the film took its toll.
"I was so tired of being wet and there was no time not to be wet except at night, and so then it was tequila."
