Stars shine on Baftas red carpet

Knutsford Guardian: Dame Helen Mirren sported pink hair at the Baftas Dame Helen Mirren sported pink hair at the Baftas

Some of the biggest names in Hollywood braved the wind and the rain to meet fans on the red carpet at the Baftas - but Dame Helen Mirren's hairstyle stole the show.

Stars including Hugh Jackman, Jennifer Lawrence and Eddie Redmayne stopped to sign autographs and pose for pictures outside the Royal Opera House in London's Covent Garden.

Also on the red carpet were Daniel Day-Lewis, Jessica Chastain, George Clooney and Dame Helen - the latter sporting dyed pink hair.

Among other celebrities at the event, formally known as the EE British Academy Film Awards, were Hobbit star Martin Freeman, Alicia Vikander and Tom Hiddleston.

Paloma Faith, who was due to start the show with a performance of INXS hit Never Tear US Apart, confessed her hair alone had taken an hour to get ready for the big night.

The singer looked amazing with her red and blonde hair twisted into a tower above her head, with De Beers diamond clips in her hair, matching earrings and a bejewelled dress. She said: "I'm excited and pleased and relaxed. It's one I've done a lot of times, so I don't have to remember the lyrics or anything."

Tom Hooper said he was pinching himself over the amount of award nominations Les Miserables has had. The Oscar-winning director of the musical set during the hard times of the French Revolution laughed off the snow and rain on the red carpet at the Baftas, saying "When you've worked on Les Miserables, you can't really complain about being freezing!"

He said: "It's great to be on the red carpet with nine nominations tonight, only two years after The King's Speech. I'm pinching myself. I'm so thrilled for Anne Hathaway and Hugh Jackman and my sound team. Les Mis is all about singing, so it's great that they're nominated."

Andrea Riseborough confessed she was feeling nervous about the De Beers diamonds she had borrowed for the ceremony.

The EE Bafta Rising Star Award nominee looked stunning in a bright yellow frock teamed with matching diamond necklace and bracelets. She said: "The dress is Vivienne Westwood - suitably British, and these are De Beers - it's a sort of 'sign your life away' situation to borrow them!"
