Britney Spears is leaving the US version of The X Factor, according to someone familiar with plans for the Fox TV show.

The pop princess was a mentor on the singing contest for one season, reportedly earning 15 million US dollars (£9.4 million) but failing to pull reviews to match.

The person who confirmed reports of her departure spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorised to comment publicly.

They said that, over the festive holiday, producers discussed replacements for Britney and for another X Factor panellist, record executive Antonio "LA" Reid.

LA previously announced that he would leave the show after two seasons.

It is yet another shake-up for The X Factor, British music mogul Simon Cowell's attempt to strike gold with an American version of his successful UK series.

He replaced panellists Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger after a disappointing first season.
