X Factor winner holds onto top spot
The X Factor champion James Arthur has retained his charts crown after a close contest with Will.i.am and Britney Spears.
Despite stiff mid-week competition, the 24-year-old singer from Middlesbrough saw debut single Impossible stay ahead of the American duo's offering for another week.
It means Will.i.am is still looking for his second number one as lead artist and Britney will have to wait to score her highest-charting UK single since Every Time in 2004.
Impossible became the fastest-selling X Factor winner's single ever when it debuted at number one on December 16 and is now nearing a million sales. It missed out on the Christmas top slot to the Justice Collective's cover of He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother, but returned to number one last week.
Still holding its ground, Psy's viral hit Gangnam Style remained at number three after it was announced this week as sixth best-selling single of 2012.
New Year cheer rubbed off in a good way for some artists and it was a strong week for re-entries to the singles chart. After featuring in the New Year's Eve edition of Top Of The Pops, Calvin Harris FT Tinie Tempah's Drinking From The Bottle climbed 28 positions to come in 15th.
In the album chart, Emeli Sande's Our Version Of Events was knocked off the top into second spot but still managed to break a record to become the solo debut album with most consecutive Top 10 weeks in UK chart history. The 25-year-old's breakthrough year was rounded off with the announcement this week that Our Version Of Events was the best-selling album of 2012.
Returning to number one, Calvin Harris's 18 Months allowed the Scottish DJ's impressive run of chart glory to continue. Since debuting at number one in October, 18 Months has given the 28-year-old seven top 20 singles, including We Found Love with Rihanna and Sweet Nothing with Florence Welch.
