PARALYMPICS medallist Niki Birrell is to be lauded for his achievement by his home town.

Cheshire East Council has announced that it will welcome its first Paralympian back to the borough with a homecoming parade on Friday week, September 28.

The Knutsford sailor claimed a bronze medal in the SKUD 18 class alongside Alexandra Rickham in Weymouth.

He will lead a cavalcade from Adams Hill car park, moving to King Street before a return along Tatton Street and Princess Street before rejoining Toft Road.

A celebration follows at the Civic Centre, to which residents will be allowed entry.

Reigning world champion Birrell is among the first sailors to win a medal while representing Great Britain at the Paralympics since the sport became part of the event’s programme at the turn of the century.
