Royal London B end title favourites' Team Knockout Cup run

HOLDERS Mobberley D eased through to the last eight of the Knutsford and District Amateur League’s Team Knockout Cup this week, writes Andrew Simpson.

They overcame a 40-points handicap deficit to see off Division Two rivals Knutsford Cons C.

But the second round drama happened elsewhere.

Top tier title hopefuls Mobberley A crashed out against Division Two minnows Royal London B, winners on only two occasions from 13 attempts in the league so far this season.

Their 260-points headstart proved too much for the favourites to overcome.

League leaders Morley A suffered the same fate in the first round, exiting against second division promotion hopefuls Mobberley B.

Brook Street A were another high-profile casualty, losing the second stage’s closest encounter by just six points against Shaw Heath.

Meanwhile Wilmslow Cons A and Knutsford Cons B – both winners against their clubmates – Mere A and Royal London A complete the quarter finals line-up.

History will not repeat itself for Royal London’s Mark Newall, who last season became the first player to reach all five competition finals in the same campaign.

Runner up in the Rotary Cup final last April, he exited at the first round stage this time around after losing against Mike Sullivan (Wilmslow Cons).

There was no such problem in the Jay Trophy preliminary round though after scheduled opponent Adam McNeil (Mobberley) conceded the tie.
