JIMMY Evans, Knutsford’s chairman, has urged the club’s players to complete a double after they lifted the Cheshire FA Amateur Cup for the first time.

Reds edged Vauxhall Motors after extra time at Wincham Park on Friday, ending a wait of more than a decade for a Cheshire League side to prevail in the competition.

Their target now is to win the Premier Division title.

“Our schedule from here is ‘bang bang’ with one game after another,” said Evans.

“I think that might have been a problem had we not won the final on Friday.”

A side managed by Scott Dignan and Paul Riley is nine points clear of champions Whaley Bridge with as many matches left.

Reds continue their run-in at Malpas on Saturday.

They then host Eagle Sports at Manchester Road on Tuesday, kick-off 6.30pm.

Evans told the Guardian that Knutsford’s maiden success at county level is a highlight of his association with the club.

He added: “We’ve toiled for a long time to enjoy this moment.

“Look at [groundsman] Brian Deeley – he’s been here for 52 years!

“I think there is relief too in some ways to get our hands on what is a beautiful trophy.

“We expected it to be tough, and it was – Vauxhall Motors are a strong side in their league and I expect them to win the title.

“But overall I felt we deserved our moment.

“There has been a sense that we ought to have won the competition before now, especially during this cycle of success that started under Paul Schofield in 2009.

“The players felt that, certainly ones that have been here a while.”
