TOM Howard believes title success for Knutsford’s first team can enhance the club’s reputation.

The Black Knights will occupy top spot in the North West Men’s League’s top-flight at the end of this season, securing promotion back to the North League.

They dropped out of that competition eight years ago.

“It’s a massive achievement,” said the captain.

“I’m hopeful it can enhance the standing of hockey in the town as well as helping us to attract new players.

“It can galvanize our junior players as well, acting as an incentive for them to break into a first-team that is competing at a high standard.”

The Black Knights ran out 5-4 victors against Blackpool in their final home game last weekend – a 16th win in 21 Division One fixtures this season – and finish nine points clear of Didsbury Northern seconds.

After finishing fourth last season, their first back in the top-flight following promotion from Division Two in 2016, Howard says having a settled side has made a difference.

He said: “We’ve enjoyed stability because guys have consistently made themselves available.

“That has created a positive environment too, and we’ve probably picked up points this time around from situations that in the past we’ve allowed to frustrate us.

“We’ve changed coach, and he’s used his knowledge of the club to get the best out of everybody in a system that works.”

They concluded the campaign with a trip to Keswick on Sunday, and shared the spoils after a draw.

Knutsford made the trip in buoyant mood.

Howard added: “The atmosphere around the club is very positive on the whole.

“Three of our four senior teams have either won promotion or secured their position in the division they’re currently in for another season.

“That’s a great achievement – something to be proud of – and everybody has worked hard to get us there.

“I sense a togetherness, and those in other teams are happy for us.

“We’ll enjoy a well-earned rest after this weekend before the summer season starts and, beyond that, pre-season.”

He will share the captaincy with Jonny Price next term.

Off the field, Howard Taylor has agreed to become club’ president after stepping down as chairman.

Knutsford’s annual awards evening follows next month.
