TONY Crompton has ended a near four-decade wait to claim the Knutsford and District Amateur League’s premier knockout prize.
The Mobberley A man, a six-time runner-up, came from behind to beat teammate Bruce Tulley in an entertaining Jay Trophy final at Victory Hall last Wednesday.
Tulley took the first frame, aided by a break of 36, before Crompton rallied to take the next two and claim victory.
He received a bye to the showpiece after scheduled semi-final opponent Mike Roylance was taken to hospital with a back injury earlier the same day.
Meanwhile Tulley, who has taken home the silverware on 10 previous occasions, proved too strong for Alderley’s Andy Towers – a champion himself back in 1986 – in the other last-four tie.
