TONY Crompton and Mike Roylance took the JME Transport Alternate Pairs title from the holders following the final on Wednesday.

The Mobberley duo emerged as worthy victors after two frames against Brook Street combination Gary Long and Bob Jones, finalists for a third successive season.

Crompton and Roylance started finals night at Wilmslow Cons with a head-to-head against surprise packages Richard Owen and Chris Bushell – conquerors of favourites Bruce Tulley and Mark Newall in the last eight.

And the Mere tandem made their opponents work before their run came to an end.

Players take alternate shots, and the pair with the highest aggregate score – once their handicap has been added – progress to the next stage.

Long and Jones did not have an easy ride either before subduing Mobberley C teammates Josh Street – one of the youngest winners of a Knutsford and District Amateur League competition – and newcomer Jamie Hunter.

However Crompton and Roylance proved too strong in the final, and got their hands on the third trophy to be handed out so far this season.
