Egerton 3-2 Warrington Town res

EGERTON are the first team through to the Cheshire FA Amateur Cup’s last 16 after a thrilling win against higher-ranked opponents.

And they made it there without leading scorer James Thorne, who had been on target 18 times in only seven previous appearances this season.

Fortunately Yellows could count on Dez Ofori, and his brace helped them to edge spirited guests during a tense finale.

The Knutsford side had to be patient against a solid defence, but were rewarded midway through the opening half when Ofori broke the deadlock.

Warrington drew level after a swift counter-attack, only for Ofori to put the home side in front for a second time.

There was little to choose between the teams in the second period, although Egerton took a significant step towards the next stage when Aaron Knight applied a finishing touch following fine build-up play.

However the Cheshire League One leaders were made to sweat after Town converted a penalty with six minutes left.

They pushed for an equaliser during the time that remained, hoping to force extra time, only for Dean Gorre’s men to protect their slender lead.

A draw for the third round will follow this weekend’s round of matches.

Yellows are not scheduled to play again until Saturday week, October 21, when they visit FC St Helens in the JA Walton Challenge Cup first round.

Meanwhile they continue to occupy top spot in the League One standings despite not playing a league game since a 3-2 success against Mersey Valley at the start of last month.
