GARY Long and Bob Jones got their hands on a trophy at Mere Parish on Wednesday, although not in the way they would have wanted.

The Brook Street duo progressed to the Knutsford and District Amateur League’s JME Alternate Pairs final after a hard-fought victory against club-mates Andy Long and Steve Prosser in the last four.

However there was nobody waiting there to face them.

Holders Paul Adkin and Steve Flinders, of Mobberley A, did not turn up after receiving a bye in their semi final.

They had squeezed past Mere C tandem Steven Bloor and Philip Simpson in last month’s first round, only for their opponents at the next stage to fail to show.

Long and Jones are crowned as 2016 winners by default.

In Division One, Mobberley A brushed aside Wilmslow Cons A.

Their lead over second-placed Shaw Heath, who won at Morley, is now worth 26 points.

Elsewhere, Mobberley B and Alderley Union recorded wins against Tatton and Brook Street A respectively.

Mobberley C lead the way in Division Two after turning on the style to whitewash hosts Mere A on Thursday.

Wilmslow Cons B, their closest rivals, won at Mere C while third-placed Wilmslow RBL were victors on their visit to Mobberley D.

Mere B won 5-2 at Brook Street B.
